1537 Deed

31 July 1537 Grant of land in reversion from the last Prior of Walsingham, Richard Vowell, to Edward Cockett, knight, of lands and tenements [buildings] in Appleton in the manor of Flitcham, Norfolk, next to property in Hillington which Cockett already owns. Both sides are shown here (below), with a larger-scale photograph of the front and back of the [repaired] seal. Its main interest now is in the seal: one side shows what is assumed to be the original 12th century statue of Our Lady of Walsingham, on which the present statue is modelled. The other side shows what may well be the medieval shrine church, destroyed in 1538. Amateur photography was limited on this occasion by glass and a frame, and by strong sunlight to the right. ________ This deed was an anonymous gift [from Sir William Milner] to Fr Patten in 1932: a facsimile hangs in the Shrine’s Welcome Centre.
